Something to look at
In the first months a baby cannot reach or grasp, but can follow. A mobile gives the eyes a slow, predictable thing to track, which is calming at the changing table and at bedtime. Strong contrast works better than fine detail.
Hanging it safely
Fix a mobile out of reach, roughly thirty centimetres above the baby's chest, and take it down once your child can push up on hands and knees. Check the fastening now and then, especially on wooden arms. Wind-up mobiles stop by themselves, which many parents prefer.
