Puzzles for 2 and 3 Year Olds
Puzzles of roughly ten to fifty pieces: wooden puzzles, first jigsaws, floor puzzles and layered puzzles.
From placing to fitting
Between two and three a child stops dropping pieces into recesses and starts joining them to each other. That is a real leap, and the first jigsaw where the picture only appears at the end is the moment it happens. Twelve to twenty-four pieces is where most children make it.
Choosing a puzzle
Thick card or wooden pieces are easier to pick up and survive being pressed too hard. A puzzle with a picture on the base helps a child who is still learning where things go. Floor puzzles with large pieces work well for two children puzzling together.
