Spirograph
Spirograph is the classic drawing set of toothed wheels and rings with which you draw perfectly symmetrical figures. It has been a fixture for decades and is still surprisingly hard to put down.
How it works
You pin a ring to the paper, put a pen through one of the holes in a wheel and run the wheel around the inside of the ring. Every hole gives a different pattern, and with several colours over one another the result becomes a complex rosette.
Sets and age
There are compact travel sets and large boxes with a great many wheels and pens. From about six a child manages on their own; younger ones need a hand with pinning the ring down, which is the only fiddly part.
