Shape Puzzles
A shape puzzle is the first puzzle a child makes: a wooden or card board with cut-out shapes into which the matching pieces fit exactly. Most pieces have a knob so that small fingers can lift them out.
The first puzzle experience
In a shape puzzle every piece has one place and that place is visible from the start. That is why a child of around eighteen months can already manage one, and that first success is exactly what gets puzzling going. It practises shape recognition, spatial insight and the pincer grip between thumb and forefinger.
Knobs and material
Puzzles with thick knobs suit about eighteen months and up; smaller knobs ask for more control and work from around two and a half. Wooden boards last longest and stay flat, while card versions are lighter to take along.
