Weighted Soft Toys
A weighted soft toy is a cuddly animal with extra weight in the body, usually from a filling of small granules. The light pressure on the lap or on the chest feels calming to a great many children and helps with settling, with falling asleep and with moments of tension.
Which weight to choose
The guideline generally used is around ten per cent of the child's body weight, counting the soft toy and any blanket together. A weighted animal usually weighs between half a kilo and two kilos, and is meant to lie on the lap or the stomach, never over the face.
Who they are for
They are widely used by children who become overstimulated quickly or who find it hard to fall asleep, and in sensory work. A child should always be able to push the toy off unaided, so it is not for a baby or for anyone who cannot move it away.
