Lyra Wax Crayons
Wax crayons from Lyra are meant for the youngest artists: thick, solid blocks and sticks of wax that give plenty of colour without a child having to press hard. They break less easily than ordinary chalks and sit well in a fist grip.
Blocks or sticks
A wax block has flat faces, so you can colour a broad area with the side and draw a line with a corner. Round or hexagonal wax sticks look more like a pencil and are a logical step towards a pen grip. Both suit a child from the moment scribbling becomes deliberate.
Practical points
Wax gives off no dust and needs no sharpening. Marks on a table wipe away with a dry cloth; on wallpaper they are far harder, so a large sheet of paper underneath is worth the trouble.
