Foam Clay
Foam clay is a light modelling material made of tiny polystyrene beads held together in a soft binder. It does not stick to hands, it takes colour brightly, and it dries hard in the air without an oven.
How it behaves
It squashes and rolls like ordinary clay but weighs almost nothing, so a model does not sag under its own weight. It sticks readily to itself, to card, to polystyrene shapes and to wood, which is why it is used to cover a shape rather than to build one from scratch.
Drying and keeping it
A thin layer is dry in a day, a thick one takes longer, and once it has set the surface is firm and slightly springy. Close the pot straight after use: air is the only thing that spoils it, and a pot left open goes crumbly at the top.
