Wool & Yarn
Wool and yarn are used for knitting, crochet, weaving, pompom making and finger crochet. Thicker yarn works best for children: it grows quickly, the stitches are easy to see and a mistake is easy to pull back.
Which thickness to choose
The ball band gives a needle or hook size, four millimetres or eight for example. For a child starting out, yarn calling for six to eight millimetres is the easiest to handle. Acrylic is cheaper and machine washable, while wool feels softer and is warmer.
More than knitting
With a pompom maker, a small weaving frame or a knitting mill, children can work without needles at all. Leftover yarn is also ideal for doll hair, for threading and for tying up finished craft work.
