Knitting Needles
Knitting needles, together with the yarn, decide how tight or loose the work turns out. They come in wood, bamboo, plastic and metal, in thicknesses from about 3 to 10 millimetres and in a range of lengths.
Which thickness for which yarn
Every ball of yarn carries a needle recommendation. Follow it and the stitch proportions come out right. For children, needles of 6 to 8 millimetres are the pleasantest: the work grows visibly and the stitches do not slip off so easily.
Wood or metal
Wooden and bamboo needles have more grip, so stitches are less likely to shoot off the end. That is exactly what a beginner needs. Metal needles are smoother and therefore quicker, which is handier once some routine has been built up.
