Filling Trays
Filling trays are wooden or plastic moulds with a cut-out figure that children fill with rice, sand, pebbles, pompoms, buttons or dried flowers. When the picture is full you tip it out and start again.
Filling, counting and sorting
Filling practises scooping, judging quantity and patience. A child working with different materials discovers that the same shape swallows far more small pieces than large ones, which is a first physical experience of volume and number.
Combine with loose parts
A filling tray works best next to a tub of loose material with a scoop or a pair of tongs. Give an older child the tongs rather than the scoop: the pinching movement strengthens exactly the grip needed later for a pencil.
