Doormats
A doormat catches sand, water and dirt before any of it reaches the hall, and that one step saves a remarkable amount of cleaning further into the house.
Outside or inside
Outdoor mats in coir or rubber scrape coarse dirt off the soles of shoes, which is what they are shaped for. Indoor mats with a fibrous top layer mainly take up moisture and then dry out again, so the two do different jobs and work best together.
Size and grip
Choose a mat as wide as the doorway, so that everyone walks over it rather than around it. A rubber backing keeps the mat from sliding on a smooth floor or curling up at the corners, which is the point at which a mat becomes a trip hazard.
