Canvas for Painting
A canvas is a cotton cloth stretched over a wooden frame and primed with gesso. Because of that priming it does not drink up the paint, so the colour stays bright instead of sinking dull into the weave. Canvas is the standard surface for acrylic and oil paint.
Which size to choose
For a child's first painting a small format of twenty by twenty or thirty by forty centimetres works best: it is finished in an afternoon and it can be held in one hand while working. Larger canvases need considerably more paint and a good deal more patience.
Ready to hang
Because the cloth is already on a frame, a finished painting goes straight onto the wall without needing to be framed first. Let acrylic paint dry for at least a day before the canvas is moved or stacked against another one.
