Pillar Candles
A pillar candle is a thick, free-standing candle that needs no candlestick and can be put on a saucer or into a glass. Its bulk is why it burns considerably longer than a dinner candle. They come in a range of diameters and heights, and in a great many colours.
A long burning time
The thicker the candle, the longer it lasts, and a substantial pillar burns for tens of hours. Let a new one burn the first time until the whole top surface has gone liquid. If that is not done, it will burn a narrow shaft down the middle ever afterwards and leave the outer rim standing.
Surface and safety
Always put a pillar candle on a heat-resistant dish, because towards the end it can leak down the side. Blow it out before the flame reaches the base, and keep it away from anything that could be scorched by the warm wax.
