Why swim in something tight
A close model stays in place on a dive and on every turn, and it holds no water behind it to drag along the length. Chlorine-resistant fabric lasts a great deal longer in a heated indoor pool than an ordinary elastane mix, which goes slack within a season.

Take the usual size; a swim brief is meant to fit snugly. Rinse it in cold water straight after swimming, do not wring it out, and let it dry in the shade. That keeps the elastic supple for far longer than any other habit will.
