Growing Crystals
With a crystal set a powder is dissolved in warm water and the solution is then left to evaporate slowly. What remains are real crystals that can be watched growing over days or weeks. It is chemistry that can be followed with the naked eye.
How it works
Warm water can hold more dissolved material than cold water. As the solution cools and evaporates, the dissolved substance no longer fits and settles around a seed crystal or a thread. The stiller it is left, the more regular the crystals turn out.
Patience and supervision
Reckon on a few days to a couple of weeks, and put the jar somewhere nobody will knock against it. The pouring of hot water is a job for an adult. Most sets are meant for around eight years and upwards, when waiting a fortnight is a possibility.
