Bontempi Instruments
Bontempi is an Italian maker of musical instruments for children: keyboards, guitars, drums, microphones, trumpets and recorders, made to be played rather than only looked at.
Real notes
The keyboards and wind instruments are tuned, so what a child plays is an actual note and a simple tune comes out recognisable. That matters: an instrument that sounds wrong gets abandoned within a week.
Where to begin
For toddlers there are drums, tambourines and small keyboards with a handful of keys. From about five a keyboard with more octaves, a recorder or a first guitar makes sense, and it will show soon enough whether lessons are worth starting.
