Give a child a wheelbarrow and it will be filled with sand, leaves, stones and at least one soft toy within minutes. Pushing a loaded barrow takes balance and strength, so it is genuine outdoor exercise. It also makes a toddler part of whatever is happening in the garden.
What to look for
A metal tray and a proper inflated or solid rubber wheel roll over grass, which plastic castors do not. Handles at around fifty centimetres suit two- to five-year-olds. Check that the legs hold the barrow steady when it is standing still and being filled.
