Colouring books and separate colouring pages exist for every age: from thick outlines with large areas for toddlers to fine designs with a great deal of detail for teenagers and adults. Colouring asks almost no preparation and is one of the quietest things to set a child to.
Choosing by age
For toddlers from two, large closed areas with a thick outline work best. From four the shapes may become smaller, and from eight there are books with fine patterns in which pencils do more justice to the work than felt pens.
Paper and materials
Thin paper is fine for pencil and wax crayon, but felt pen ink comes through to the next page. A book with heavier paper, or a sheet of card laid underneath, solves that.
