What to look at when choosing
Match the size to the child rather than to the years ahead: a bag that hangs below the bottom pulls a child backwards. Look for padded straps, a chest clip and a back panel that keeps a lunch box from pressing into the spine.
Materials and cleaning
The bags are made of a coated cotton canvas with a wipe-clean lining and metal or heavy plastic zips. Sponge the outside rather than putting the bag in a machine, which softens the coating and takes the shape out of it.
