Loose Parts
Loose parts are open materials with no fixed function: wooden discs, rings, pebbles, shells, corks, glass stones, caps and natural shapes. A child decides for itself what they stand for and uses them differently each time.
Where the idea comes from
The term comes from the theory of loose parts, which holds that the more variable material an environment contains, the richer and more inventive the play becomes. A wooden disc is a coin today, a biscuit tomorrow and a wheel the day after.
How to begin
Offer a limited set in an open tub or on a tray, without explaining anything first. Add a surface to work on, a wooden board or a play mat, and leave the rest of it to the child.
