The very first puzzle
A one-year-old is not solving anything yet; it is learning that a shape belongs in a place. Inlay puzzles where each piece has its own recess make that obvious without any explanation. Getting one piece in is a genuine achievement at this age.
What to look for
Large knobs are far easier for a fist than a pinch grip, and they suit twelve to eighteen months. Pictures of familiar things, animals, vehicles or food, give something to name as well as to place. Solid wood survives being thrown, which will happen more than once.
