Single Coloured Pencils
Coloured pencils sold singly: replacement colours, thick pencils for small hands, watercolour pencils and graphite.
Replace one, not the whole set
Every set runs out of the same three colours first, and buying singles is cheaper and less wasteful than a new box. It also means a child can top up a favourite colour rather than ration it. Keeping a few spares in a drawer avoids the afternoon a drawing stops halfway.
Which pencil to pick
Thick triangular pencils suit three- to five-year-olds because they sit correctly in the hand almost automatically. Soft leads give strong colour with little pressure, which small hands appreciate. Watercolour pencils draw like a normal pencil and turn into paint with a wet brush, which children find close to magic.
