Skipping Ropes
Skipping ropes for one or more: single ropes with wooden or plastic handles, long group ropes and beaded ropes.
More exercise than it looks
Five minutes of skipping raises the heart rate as much as a much longer walk, and children rarely stop at five. Rhythm, timing and coordination all improve without anyone practising them on purpose. It is also one of the very few sports that fits entirely in a coat pocket.
Getting the length right
Stand on the middle of the rope: the handles should reach roughly to the armpits for a beginner. Beaded ropes turn over more predictably and make a clear sound on the ground, which helps with rhythm. A long rope needs two turners and a bit of space, and it is where the counting rhymes come in.
