Starting and expanding
A starter set holds a circle of track, an engine and a couple of carriages, and is enough for a child of two or three. From there the layout grows with switches, slopes, level crossings and turntables, and any set bought later simply joins the one already on the floor.
Battery engines and sound
Alongside the plain wooden engines there are battery-driven locomotives that pull a train around on their own, and stations and crossings with light and sound that react as a train passes. That is usually what tips a four year old from watching into playing.
